This Guy Is Doing A Fan Remake Of Sonic Adventure 2 And It Is Mind Blowing

Usually Sonic fan games are often overshadowed by some sort of controversy these days in the online Sonic community, but I was really curious the other day when I came across this thing called Sonic Adventure 2 Redux. It's a completely remade version of Sonic Adventure 2 which is fronted by a dude called JeliLiam, and it's being developed by a bunch of fans with Unreal Engine 5. I watched a video or two online of some gameplay and thought Sega, hire this man.

Back in late 2018 there was a lot of hype over potential Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 remakes, after Takashi Iizuka publicly stated that he was interested in remaking Sonic Adventure again one day. In 2019, unconfirmed reports were sharing details of a potential Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 remake called Sonic Project Re-Run, but it never got anywhere and after a few months it was seemingly cancelled for no reason.

Now back in 2024 it was revealed that fans decided to not wait around for Sega to do these remakes and eventually remake Sonic Adventure 2 at least, themselves.

This is one of the most impressive Sonic fan games that i've ever played that thankfully so far isn't surrounded by controversy (Yes, i'm talking about you, Sonic Omens). This ain't no lame Dreams PS4 reimagining either, a huge amount of effort looks like it's been put into this to make this fan remake actually good.

I think the biggest problem, for Sega and Sonic Team if they ever did consider a potential remake of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 these days is the music rights. Sega don't own a lot of the music rights to past Sonic games anymore, as it's a very complicated situation. However I hope Sonic Adventure 2 Redux can pass since it's just a fan made project .

In the Demo, which is available to download now, you can burst through a new really well done version of City Escape, which ran perfectly on my PC. (Adding Big The Cat during the GUN Truck chase scene just like in the real game was a really nice touch!) Then you have a new version of the Bigfoot fighter boss which is at the beginning of Sonic Adventure 2. There is 1 viewable cutscene of Shadow's Radical Highway entrance, which was completely reworked from the ground up by this guy, using models of Maria based off what I believe to be Sonic x Shadow Generations. It was done really well, and nice to see it in proper 16:9 format too. Then there was a really awesome boss fight between Shadow which has been altered and he has more hits, and uses different moves such as Chaos Control and Chaos Spear against you, so it makes it harder to just spam A all the time.

Lastly, the demo included a completely playable Metal Harbor zone too in all it's glory. I really enjoyed it as well. It looked amazing!

The demo left me wanting  more, and thankfully JeliLiam is still working hard on this project, with inclusions of stages such as Green Forest and Radical Highway to be added in the near future. I really hope they end up redoing the entire game like this. That would be awesome.
