A reboot of the Nickelodeon 90's classic TV series, Ren & Stimpy has been in the works ever since 2020, but so far is yet to see a official release. It's been in development by Comedy Central.
Unlike the previous Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon from 2003, controversial series creator John K has no involvement in this new series at all. It's been reported that up to 10 episodes were produced and completed as early as this year, with a release date of sometime in 2024 to be confirmed. But it's nearly the end of the year, and no news or previews of the reboot in sight, as well as some unconfirmed reports that it's currently on hiatus.
Earlier in the year, we got a major update from voice actor Billy West, who returns to voice both Ren & Stimpy in the new series, announcing that he had finished all of his voice lines for the project on X (Formerly known as Twitter). Since then, there's been pretty much no news at all from Paramount, Comedy Central or MTV Entertainment.
Back in July, it was reported by NickALive that the show would premiere in Latin America in the same month, but this never happened. Leading many to speculate that the reboot was cancelled for unknown reasons. However, shortly after this announcement, people started to report that several episodes of the new show started airing on TV in France and other regions of Europe without any announcement.
Things looked real bad but sometime between July and August 2024, a full 10 episode set of the completed episodes were leaked online, and were available on the now defunct website KimCartoon. Maybe this is why the reboot is delayed, because it got leaked. Similarly, the 2024 Spongebob movie Saving Bikini Bottom, got leaked on X way back in March, causing Netflix to delay the release until later in the year. Could the same thing be said to the Ren & Stimpy reboot? From the clips i've seen, it is very good and the animation stays true to the original series. It feels a lot like a modern day Ren & Stimpy with still a lot of the silly and gross stuff in between.
Despite not having John K involved, the Ren & Stimpy Reboot stays faithful to the original show while providing a fresh and modern twist to the series.
I did come across some Apple TV listings for the new reboot but they weren't released yet. I really hope that the new reboot isn't cancelled. 2024 has been a pretty bad year for animation, along with the potential cancellation of the Looney Tunes movie, Coyote vs Acme, which was shelved several times for tax purposes, despite it being completed and ready to go, and in high demand, is currently up for acquisition. So far nobody has come forward to save it from the Warner Bros Graveyard.
Hopefully the Ren & Stimpy Reboot does get saved and eventually released to the public.
