Top 10 Best Spongebob Games

Spongebob has been a successful television Icon for over 20 years, and also has a lot of great video games to his name over the years, spanning over several consoles these past few decades. Last week, Cameron (who also runs his own Youtube channel, called Entertaining Entertainment) made a video of the subject that you can check out below:

In this list, I will transcribe what is said in the video.

#10 - The Cosmic Shake

The Cosmic Shake was released in January 2023, and it's the first new original Spongebob game in quite some time. It's kind of like Spongebob meets Back To The Future. Spongebob and friends get sucked into multiple worlds and across different universes & time periods. It's a very large and enjoyable game somewhat like an Open World Spongebob. However, some people think that there is too much combat and it is repetitive. While I agree that the combat can get a bit irritating for this game, Spongebob The Cosmic Shake still proves to be a joy to play. It's great to have the original show's cast voice characters that we all know and love from the show.

#9 - Atlantis Squarepantis The Game

Atlantis Squarepantis was based on the TV special of the same name where Spongebob and friends visit Atlantis and meet the King of Atlantis who is voiced by David Bowie. The episode premiered in the 5th season back in 2007. There were several different versions of this game. One on PS2 & Wii, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. You basically play out the TV show's worlds in the game. It's based on a lot of side quests but there is a good amount of platforming involved as well. Though it's short, roughly only takes a couple of hours to beat on one sitting, I still found it to be quite a fun experience back in the day.

#8 - Spongebob Supersponge

Released on the PS1 in 2001, Spongebob Supersponge is a 2D Side Scrolling platformer. In the game you must do nonsensical things for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, as Spongebob wants to get Patrick an autograph for them for his birthday but Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy want nothing to do with him. It is a great adventure game with a nice art style. However I did find the game to be very challenging, even after a certain point it would be very hard for no reason. But it is a fun game.

#7 - Spongebob The Yellow Avenger

Released on the PSP and Nintendo DS, back in 2005, this story evolves around Spongebob accidentally acquiring Mermaid Man's powers from his belt that he finds. He unleashes the dirty bubble by accident and must save the town from destruction with the use of Mermaid Man's superhero belt. The game is an interesting 2D platformer. I never had it on PSP but I have it on Nintendo DS. To me it feels like a spiritual successor of Spongebob Supersponge.

#6 - Spongebob Legend Of The Lost Spatula

Released on the Game Boy Colour back in 2001, I was reminded of this game while compiling this list. I remembered enjoying it back in the day. The game is a 2D Platformer, where Spongebob must become the world's best Frycook by retrieving the Golden Spatula from the Flying Dutchman. (Though I already thought Spongebob was the world's best fry cook, anyway) The game was pretty simplistic. But still fun and had some really nice 8 bit versions of the music soundtrack.

#5 - Revenge Of The Flying Dutchman

Honestly I always preferred  the Game Boy Advance version of this game. Also released on Gamecube and PS2, developed by Big Sky Studios. One day Spongebob finds the Flying Dutchman's magic lamp and rubs it, waking him. Dutchman gets really annoyed and punishes Spongebob by stealing Gary. You have to collect multiple name plates that spell out Spongebob's name in order to get him back. While the Gamecube version was very good, I really enjoyed the Game Boy Advance version with it's bright and contrasting graphics, and very different gameplay. Sadly, the PS2 version of the game suffered from technical issues with loading. This caused most of the PS2 versions of the game to crash upon loading on certain points. This issue wasn't evident in the Gamecube version but was enough to make the developers BigSky to go out of business.

#4 - Spongebob & Friends Globs Of Doom

While it's a Nickelodeon Crossover game, I still think it should be included here because it's set in the Spongebob universe. A sequel to Attack of the Toybots, Bikini Bottom one day gets invaded by a bunch of globs falling out of the sky and turns everybody into monsters. Spongebob must team up with a lot of the other Nickelodeon characters in order to save the day.

#3 - Truth Or Square

Based on the TV special which was celebrating the 10th anniversary of the show back in 2009, the game was released on the Wii and Xbox 360. You play as Spongebob & friends and use different abilities and tricks because Mr Krabs lost the Krabby Patty Secret Formula and you must team up with Plankton in order to get it back. You go through many Spongebob's memories that are based on a lot of classic moments from the TV show. It's a cool concept and a fun game. Thankfully, it's now available on Xbox Series X backwards compatibility in glorious 4K remastered port.

#2 - Battle For Bikini Bottom / BFBB Rehydrated

Released originally on the Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox back in 2003, Battle for Bikini Bottom is widely regarded as one of the greatest Spongebob games of all time and there's no secret as to learn why. It is such a fun 3D platformer. The plot is simple & basic. Spongebob must save Bikini Bottom that is overrun by a army of Plankton's robots. In 2020, the game was remastered on Xbox, PS4 and Switch as Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated with amaizng results. The new graphics look stunning and played better than ever. BFBB still remains one of the greatest Spongebob games of all time. I'm so glad The Cosmic Shake used the same kind of art style as I feel like it's a great spiritual successor for BFBB.

#1 - The Spongebob Movie Game

I think the Spongebob Movie game is the best Spongebob game of all time. Released in 2004, on the Gamecube, GBA, PS2 and Xbox, you play through the main movie as well as having extended scenes in game through the levels. You can visit Goofy Goobers, you can drive the Patty Wagon, you can ride the Hasselhoff and fight Dennis, you can even see more of Plankton's robotic army and Planktopolis in the game than you do in the actual film! I remember spending ages on this game. I loved it!

There you go, what I think are the top 10 best Spongebob games of all time. Did you enjoy this list? Did you enjoy the video? if you did, be sure to subscribe to Entertaining Entertainment for more great content and also follow us over here on Emerald Rangers too!
