Yes, i've seen Sonic The Hedgehog 2. But i've actually now seen it 2 times. How is this possible? In Australia it premiered last week; on March 31st, and I went on the first day, at 4DX Cinemas, and again, at 4DX cinemas a few days ago, taking a friend along for the ride. Before 2020 COVID shutdowns messed everything up for the next year or so, the last film I went to see in the cinemas was....Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)! Also, at the same 4DX cinema I went to see the 2nd one!
For a start, it's great to be going back to the movies again. I love the cinema. I especially love going to the cinema before school holidays. (Thankfully, they don't start in NSW until the 8th of April) so we got a great dose of fun cinema small crowd in a COVID safe environment.
Okay, so at this point pretty much everybody's seen the first Sonic the Hedgehog Movie right. So I am sure you guys know that Tails is in the new film. He's all over the freaking trailers now and everything so don't get mad at me. But I will try to be as spoiler-free as I possibly can with this review. Or should I say, experience.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues from where we left off in the first Sonic movie (that was also enjoyable and fun). Sonic is now used to his life in Green Hills. However, in a way without trying to spoil things so much, stuff goes down and Tails and Knuckles show up. Knuckles, who although wasn't revealed in the first movie, but confirmed during production, (voiced by Idris Elba), and of course, Tails, (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey). Idris Elba does a great job at providing a tough and comical voice for the character. Meanwhile, Colleen returns to voice Tails, who used to voice him in the games. The games get so confusing now and I can never really keep track of who the heck is voicing anyone in the games anymore because the game voice actors keep on changing all the time.
Knuckles is on a quest to find the Master Emerald, which holds the source of the ultimate power, and takes Dr. Robotnik along with him, while Sonic and Tails go on an adventure to try to stop him and Dr Robotnik taking over the world.
The film mixes a highly entertaining range of fast-paced action and adventure, that most fans of the games will appreciate. The movie's story doesn't really slow down that much or get too boring. The fun thing I always found about these Sonic movies is that you don't really have to be a fan of the games to appreciate or enjoy these movies. Even if you're a non-Sonic fan, but say, love people like Jim Carrey, or just want to see a fun movie, these Sonic films are perfect for you.
Once again, Jim Carrey provides another incredible performance. One of the best i've ever seen. He blew me away! I was very impressed at the evolved Dr. Robotnik. Alongside other live action cast members, such as James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and of course fan-favourite Lee Majdoub (who returns as Dr. Robotnik's obsessed steamed Latte with Austrian-Goat's milk making personal assistant).
Just like the original film, the sequel also contains a lot of fun easter-eggs and nods that i'm sure a lot of fans will spot and enjoy throughout the adventure.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will certainly make many fans of the game very happy. Thankfully we have some more Sonic movies, before the next game comes out, Sonic Frontiers is supposedly expected to be released at the end of this year. During the time we've had no new Sonic games we've had 2 new very successful movies instead.
With a 3rd movie officially already in the works (it was announced before the 2nd one came out), and a new Knuckles based TV Series set for Paramount.+ next year, I certainly look forward to further instalments in the Sonic Movie Universe franchise.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is out now in cinemas. Gotta book your tickets fast!
