Red Prime Shard: Surge Soda pop (Amazon) - Review
Anyone remember when the Coca-Cola drink: Surge was available in the 90s and for a while in the early 2000s? It had a very 90s logo that came off as graffiti and hand painted, and it was delicious. It was one of my favorite drinks in the 90s. The commercials were weird with single can or bottle of Surge being set up as a prize, someone yells “SURGE” and then we see people race and compete for the drink, and it was advertised as a fully loaded citrus soda with carbos with the tagline being “Feed The Rush” and using signs of extreme sports to really make it an EXTREME drink for a 90s audience. Honestly, I think a whole fridge or cooler of Surge would make more sense for these if we were to “Feed The Rush.” About a year later, the logo changed to a more digital one that would clearly be made in a computer and for the most part, I think that one would work for a more mainstream audience, but there was a special charm about the original, and it seems Coca-Cola thought so as well since they used the old logo for the revival. The drink was made as a competitor to Pepsi’s Mountain Dew and originally created with the codename MDK (Mountain Dew Killer), and for a while, it had a following, but then was eventually discontinued in 2003. So with the revival version released, I wanted to try it again, but didn’t get the chance until recently.
So I am drinking Surge again. I drank it at a Freestyle Fountain and it didn’t taste as good as I remembered. Now I never had Surge from a fountain before, so maybe that was why, but I do know the recipe has been slightly altered.
Now I got some cans and I chilled some in a fridge and a cold taste and I some cans unchilled for an unchilled taste.
So far, drinking the chilled can, it tastes a LOT more nostalgic and better tasting. I don’t completely remember the original taste as it’s been many years, but this chilled can tastes really good. It has an orange, tangerine, like taste, which makes sense as one of the ingredients is orange juice and it was in the original formula as well.
Now drinking the unchilled can, I am able to taste more of the flavor. Again, it tastes a LOT better then the fountain version. The downside is that it’s not as rich tasting as I remember the original version being. Maybe it’s my taste buds, but if anyone else can confirm this to me, it would help. That aside, what I do taste is still nostalgic and true enough to what I remember from the 90s.
Now I only drank two cans upon doing this review as these drinks are loaded with caffeine, and two is my limit. For a 16 oz can, the caffeine amount is 69 mg and the sugar amount is 56g per can.
So far, if you are into citrus flavored sodas like Orange Soda, Lemon-Lime Sodas, you’ll probably like this. Also, for technically being an energy drink due to it’s sugar and caffeine content, I like that it’s not overpowering like a Monster energy drink or some others which have made me sick in the past. If you also grew up with this in the 90s, it’s mostly the same taste, so it’s a good throwback to the past. I recommend you do not drink it from a Burger King Freestyle fountain as I first did unless you want to try some of their additional flavors which I have not yet at the time of writing this review. Buy the cans on Amazon if you really want them or in some convenient stores if you live in Eastern USA.
